Leadership is Influence

"A leader... is like a shepherd. He stays behind the flock, letting the most nimble go ahead, whereupon the others follow, not realizing that all along they are being directed from behind." — Nelson Mandela

Leadership is not about authority; it’s about influence. Servant leaders understand that true influence is built on trust, respect, and authenticity. They don’t force people to follow—they inspire them to.

Mandela’s leadership was a perfect example of this philosophy. He didn’t seek power for his own gain; he led with the purpose of uniting a nation. Servant leaders adopt the same mindset: they guide from behind, supporting their team’s growth and success. When leaders prioritize people over power, they create a culture where influence is earned, not demanded.
